KNIGHT'S CROSS

A sign appeared to the Roman Emperor Constantine as a light in the noon-day sky. At the same time, he heard the words, "In Hoc Signo Vinces." He took this as a sign from God and decided the shape drawn by the light should be an emblem for his military.

The labarum, as a monogram engraved on soldiers' shields, is a military emblem. For Christians, it is a Christogram (or Chrismon) and reminds them of the fight against evil.

The Church Victorious

Knight's Cross

The battle of Milvian Bridge (312 AD) was one of the great decisive battles in the history of the world. It made Constantine master of the entire western part of the Roman Empire. But it had another and far more important result. Constantine embraced Christianity and issued the Edict of Milan in 313. The edict put a stop to the Christian persecutions, and proclaimed absolute freedom of conscience. It placed Christianity upon a footing of equality, before the law, with other religions in the Empire (The Church in History, B.K. Kuiper, p. 24).

Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus
Writing to Christians, Constantine the Great made clear that he believed he owed his successes to the protection of the Christian High God alone.
